🐍Bronze Back Vs. Golden Tree Frog🐸

Its on 09th September at about 8.10 am I heard something that led me to shoot one of the best pictures of nature I ever shot. That morning I entered the Sungei Buloh wetlands at around 7.45 am a bit earlier than I usually do.  There was little or no human presence to disturb the creatures that prefer to shun our race. I first went to the lotus pond as per my usual habit and could detect neither avian nor aquatic life in action. Only sound around was from a Barbet – in all probability a Lineated Barbet – which, I think, preferred to be heard than seen on this particular morning. So, I turned back from the lotus pond to proceed towards the Sea-eagle point where I hoped to find and click an early eagle swooping down to its breakfast. But, that’s when I heard a chirp. No not a chirp, its rather a creak. Whatever was making that sound continued to make it with short pauses. It came from behind me. I was sure its from a small bird and there are many bushes there. I turned back trying to feel the exact direction from which the creak was coming. I felt it was coming from ground level and turned my attention from the tops of the bushes to ground and to my right. And there I saw it –

మొన్న సెప్టెంబర్ 9 ఉదయం. ఎప్పుడూ లేనిది ఆ రోజు ఎర్లీగా పావు తక్కువ ఎనిమిది అయ్యేసరికి నాకిష్టమైన సంగీ-బులో వెట్‌లాండ్స్‌లో వున్నాను. ఆ టైముకి పార్కులో మానవ సంచారం పెద్దగా మొదలవలేదు. అలవాటు ప్రకారం పార్క్ ఎంట్రెన్స్‌కి కుడి పక్కన వుండే తామరకొలను వైపు నడిచా. అక్కడ వికసించిన పద్మాలని చూస్తూ చుట్టుపక్కల నుంచి వినబడే పక్షుల కిలకిలల బట్టీ కాళ్ళు ఎటు నడిపిస్తే అటు నడవడం అలవాటు. బట్, ఈ రోజు జల, భూ, వాయు చరాల కదలికలేవీ తెలీయడంలెదు. ఎక్కడో దూరంగా కనిపించకుండా వినిపిస్తున్న బార్బెట్ స్వరం తప్ప. (బార్బెట్ అంటే ఉక్కుముఖి అనెడి పక్షి ఆంధ్రభారతి ఉవాచ. అసలామాట వినడం ఇదే మొదలు, రామాయణంలో రాక్షసుల పేర్లలా వుంది.) సరే సీ-ఈగిల్ పాయింట్ వైపు వెళ్ళి అక్కడ చేపల కోసం ఆకాశం నుంచి నీటి వైపు దూసుకొస్తున్న ఈగిల్స్ కనపడతాయేమోననే ఆశతో అటువైపు నడవబోతున్న నాకు ‘క్రీక్’ అనే శబ్దం వినబడి ఆగిపోయాను. కొన్ని రకాల పిట్టలు అలాంటి శబ్దం చేస్తాయని తెలుసు కనక ఆ చుట్టుపక్కల పొదలకేసి చూస్తూ వెనక్కి తిరిగాను. ఆ శబ్దం నేల వైపు నుంచి వస్తోందనిపించి నా కుడి పక్కకి నేలవైపుకి తిరిగాను. జస్ట్ రెండు మీటర్ల కన్నా ఎక్కువుండదు, అంత దగ్గర్లో కనపడిందా పాము, నోట చిక్కిన కప్పతో.

A Painted Bronze Back (I later learnt from Google) with a common tree frog held in its fangs. The creeks I heard are actually the feeble croaks of the little frog. The helpless frog with its eye lids half-closed looked pained more by the squeeze of the fangs than by the venom they are injecting into it. Later I learnt Bronze Back’s venom has little or no effect on humans. Despite knowing that one must not interfere with nature’s ways I felt guilty looking into the frog’s half-shut eyes and was tempted to save the frog. But the memory of a similar encounter in which the snake had to pay with its life prevented me from doing anything.

ఈ దృశ్యం వైపు నన్ను నడిపించిన ‘క్రీక్, క్రీక్’ శబ్దాలు ఆ కప్ప ఆర్తనాదాలు, పాపం. సగం మూతపడిన కళ్ళతో, నిస్సహాయంగా (దగ్గర్లో నేనుండి కూడా నిస్సహాయం అనే మాట వాడినందుకు గిల్టీగానే వుంది) వున్న ఆ కప్పని చూస్తే పాము విషం కంటే దాని కోరల వత్తిడే ఎక్కువ బాధ పెడుతున్నట్టు వుంది.  గూగుల్ చూసి తెలుసుకున్నాను – ఆ పాము పెయింటెడ్ బ్రాంజ్ బాక్ అనీ, కప్ప గోల్డెన్ ట్రీ ఫ్రాగ్ అనీ. కప్పలాంటి చిన్న జీవుల సంగతేమోగానీ మనుషులకి ఈ పాము విషం వల్ల ఏ ప్రమాదం లెదని కూడా గూగుల్ చెప్తోంది. అలా అని గూగుల్ చెప్పినవన్నీ నమ్మెయ్యలేం కదా, అలా అని పాము కనిపించగానె గూగుల్ చూడాలన్న ధ్యాస కూడా రాదు, కుదరదు. నాకూ రాలేదు. ఆ పాము దాని ఆహారం కోసం పోటీ పడతాననుకుందో ఏమో (నేను ప్యూర్ వెజిటేరియన్నని అది గూగుల్ చూసినా తెలీదు కదా) కప్పని పట్టుకుని పొదల్లోకి దూరుతూ అలా పైకెత్తి పట్టుకుంది. సరిగ్గా కెమెరా క్లిక్ అనేంత సమయం మాత్రం అలా వుంది. ప్రకృతిలో జరిగే సహజ ప్రక్రియల్లో జోక్యం చేసుకోకూడదని  కప్పని రక్షించాలని లోపల ఆరాటం. కానీ చాలా యేళ్ళ కిందట ఇదే సిట్యుయేషన్‌లో నేను చూస్తుండగా సెక్యూరిటీ గార్డ్ కర్ర దెబ్బలకి పెద్ద పాము ప్రాణం పొగొట్టుకుని, అది సగం మింగిన కప్ప తప్పించుకున్న సన్నివేశం గుర్తొచ్చి అలా వుండిపోయాను.
